Who is Chuck Messler?
Chuck Messler is a lifelong Lake County resident, union ironworker, husband, father, and working-class conservative running for Lake County Auditor to bring accountability, common sense, and a working man’s perspective to one of county government’s most important financial offices.
Born and raised in Crown Point, Chuck graduated from Andrean High School in 2007, where he participated in track and Academic Decathlon. He has spent his entire life in Lake County, living in Crown Point, Griffith, and now Lowell, where he and his wife, Jessica, are raising their two children, ages 15 and 11, who attend Lowell public schools.
Chuck entered the union workforce as a young man and has spent his adult life earning a living alongside the working men and women of Northwest Indiana and Chicago. He spent approximately four years as a member of Teamsters Local 710 before beginning a career with Ironworkers Local 1. For the past 12 years, he has worked as an ironworker on structural projects throughout the region, including major infrastructure work such as the Mile Long Bridge project. His experience has included structural welding, leading decking gangs, and supervising crews where safety, precision, planning, and accountability are not optional.
That experience shapes the way Chuck looks at government.
On a jobsite, measurements have to be right. Work has to be checked. Problems have to be identified before they become bigger and more expensive. And when you are responsible for a crew, a project, or someone else’s resources, you are expected to account for them.
Chuck believes taxpayers should expect the same standards from their county government.
He decided to run for Lake County Auditor after seeing the serious and longstanding problems facing the office and realizing that voters deserved a candidate willing to challenge the status quo. The Auditor’s Office plays a critical role in Lake County’s finances, and Chuck was unwilling to see an office with that much responsibility go unchallenged while documented problems remained unresolved.
Chuck is not running as a career politician or pretending to be something he is not. He is not a CPA. He is a working husband and father who understands what it means to earn a paycheck, balance a household budget, plan for bills, and make sure there is enough money to cover the obligations ahead. He knows that every dollar government handles first had to be earned by a taxpayer somewhere in Lake County.
For Chuck, accountability begins with that simple understanding: taxpayer money is not government money. It belongs to the people who worked for it.
As Auditor, Chuck wants to bring the same principles he has relied on throughout his career to county government: build strong systems, check the work, correct problems when they are found, and never accept “that’s the way we’ve always done it” as an excuse for doing something poorly.
Chuck and Jessica have been married for 15 years. They live in Lowell with their two children and remain deeply rooted in the Lake County community Chuck has called home his entire life.
His approach is straightforward: work hard, demand accountability, protect taxpayer dollars, and leave the Auditor’s Office stronger than he found it.
